International Reggae Day 2022: 60 years of ska music

Today is the global celebration of reggae music, dubbed International Reggae Day (IRD).

The annual celebration of Jamaican music and culture is this year being celebrated under the theme "60 years of ska music."

Every year, licensed IRD events are held in Jamaica and across the world, including workshops, forums, concerts, festivals, product launches, exhibits, and culinary presentations.

Reggae is an important part of Jamaican culture and identity, with its significance being recognized by UNESCO on its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018.

Culture and Entertainment Minister Olivia Grange saluted all musicians, artistes, promoters, and industry players for maintaining the genre's powerful force in uniting people across borders, generations, and cultures.

July 1 was first celebrated 28 years ago, in 1994, and was conceptualized by Andrea Davis.
