Reggae artist U-Roy - Gleaner file photo
Jamaican reggae icon Ewart Beckford, more popularly known as U-Roy, has died.
His partner Marcia Smikle confirmed to The Gleaner the veteran toaster died at the University Hospital of the West Indies after undergoing surgery on Wednesday night.
He was 79 years old.
Smikle added he had been ailing for some time and had been in and out of the hospital.
Among those paying tribute were Shaggy, Sean Paul, Spice and Bugle, who all took to social media to send their condolences.
Among his many hits was Wake The Town.
