US conservatives take issue with Sesame Street's support of COVID vaccine

Popular Sesame Street character Big Bird is facing backlash from conservative politicians, after revealing last weekend that he had been vaccinated against COVID-19.
His announcement coincides with the implementation of vaccines for children between aged five to 11.
Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz has grilled Big Bird for what he called government propaganda, while Fox News contributor Lisa Boothe described it as "brainwashing children" and "twisted."
Sesame Street has long faced grumbles from conservatives who are unhappy with its connections to US public broadcasting.
Almost 50 years ago during the show's third season, Sesame Street encouraged children to get the measles vaccine by showing Big Bird and other children getting the injection.
The move is similar to other public service campaigns that have used beloved characters to help teach children life lessons, including discouraging littering, wearing seatbelts and looking both ways before crossing the street.
