Jamaica's Ministry of Agriculture is reporting a significant reduction in the number of the country's yam exports being detained in the United States (US). It has declined from 41 last year to one so far this year.
A statement from the Ministry said Jamaica has been given approval for the use of three pesticides in the post-harvest treatment of root tubers, including yams destined for the US.
This resulted from the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries Food Safety Modernisation Act (FSMA) committee’s efforts in having alternative pesticides.
Additionally, the Ministry has sensitised more than 100 fresh produce exporters regarding the FSMA and conducted training in post-harvest management.
