Blue Power Group has been deemed ineligible to receive preferential treatment under the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas for one of its products.
The company has been informed by the Jamaica Customs Agency that based on a ruling from the World Customs Organization, bath and laundry soaps produced by the company from palm-oil based noodles do not meet CARICOM's origin requirements.
As a result, the company's exports to CARICOM countries will attract the duty rate charged on soap imports from outside the region. That rate is 40 per cent in most CARICOM countries.
A statement from Blue Power says 20 Per cent its sales go to CARICOM countries.
It added that the application of the duty may make it uneconomical for importing countries to buy from Blue Power.
