Asif Ahmad, British High Commissioner to Jamaica

Some 310 Britons who have been stuck in Jamaica since the closure of the country's borders are scheduled to return home next week.

In a release on the UK government's website, the charter flight is scheduled to depart the Norman Manley International Airport to London Heathrow?on?June 3.

Asif Ahmad, British High Commissioner to Jamaica, told Radio Jamaica News that, while it is likely there will be more demand for a flight of this nature, "the overall global government charter scheme is coming to an end and so this is really the last opportunity to get unto the programme and book a flight to the UK."

Mr. Ahmad said essential medical supplies will be transported to Jamaica on the inbound flight.

He said Jamaica's Ministry of Health and Wellness had been looking to procure from the UK about "eight pallets worth of medicines and other essential equipment," which the UK has agreed to fly to Kingston for free.

More than 4,300 British nationals, who were in Jamaica, have so far been repatriated since the COVID-19 pandemic.
