Bail extended for Reid, Pinnock and co-accused

Former Education Minister Ruel Reid, Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) President Fritz Pinnock and their co-accused had their bail extended when they appeared before the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court onn Friday.

They were ordered to return to court on July 29.

Mr. Reid, his wife Sharon and daughter Sharelle, along with Councillor Kim Brown Lawrence of the Brown's Town Division are also facing corruption charges.

The five were charged in connection with a fraud and corruption probe by the Financial Investigation Division (FID) into transactions at the CMU.

Attorney-at-law Hugh Wildman on Friday said he intends to make submissions for the case to be thrown out on the grounds that the charges against them are illegal.

Mr. Wildman argued that officers from the FID had no authority in law to arrest or bring charges against the accused.

He said his submissions will be based on the recent Privy Council ruling that the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has no authority in law to arrest, charge or prosecute.

Mr. Wildman contended that the FID Act and the INDECOM Act are similar.
