Belize election to proceed Wednesday despite country feeling effects of Eta

Prime Minister of Belize Dean Barrow has said the general election will proceed as scheduled on Wednesday, even as the country continues to mop up following the passage of Tropical Storm Eta.

Thousands of persons in the west of the country as well as parts of the south have been affected by severe floods brought about by the outer bands of Eta.

The Prime Minister said postponing the election would have required approval from the leaders of the two main political parties.

He said the election will proceed since there is nothing in the Belize Constitution that speaks to a deferral.
