The search for an elderly woman who was washed away in Drewsland, St. Andrew during Thursday's heavy rain, has ended on a unfortunate note.
The body of 78-year-old Beryl Bryant was found on Friday afternoon in the Sandy Gully.
Miss Bryant was tending to her goats when she was swept away by gushing water.
Superintendent Kirk Ricketts, head of the St. Andrew South Police Division, told Radio Jamaica News that Miss Bryant's body was found about 2:30 near Riverton City.
"It's a sad moment for the members of the community. The fact is that we had hoped that in some miraculous way we would have found her alive, but no, that wasn't the case," he lamented.
Drewsland resident Wayne Williams had told Radio Jamaica News that residents tried to rescue Miss Bryant when she became trapped in the gully but she was swept away by the water before they could reach her.
