Bunting calls for fast-track of new education policy to prevent recurrence of Kensington case

Peter Bunting

Opposition Spokesman on Education Peter Bunting is calling for the government to fast-track the implementation of a new education policy to prevent a recurrence of the incident at Kensington Primary School where a child wearing dreadlocks was barred from attending the institution.

The case sparked public uproar when it began in 2018.

It was reignited on Friday when the Supreme Court ruled that the child's constitutional rights were not breached by the school based on the case that was presented.

Mr. Bunting says a policy directive could have prevented the issue from escalating to court.

"I think it's time for the government to modernise the education code so that we don't have repeated cases going to court for the court to try and balance these issues when it can easily and systematically be dealt with by a clear, modern, progressive education policy," he suggested.

He wants the new policy to reflect modern day realities in educational institutions.

"You can't leave the system for a free for all. Each school will have its rules and there has to be some compliance with it. But there are issues that go beyond an individual school. There are issues that deal with true and full emancipation of our people. These are issues that we should not be leaving to the discretion of individual schools. These rights issues can be dealt with at a policy level easily and anything else is really a dereliction of duty by the Ministry of Education," Mr. Bunting declared.
