Caribbean urged to brace for extremely dry periods in 2020

The Caribbean has been warned to brace for another drier than normal period in 2020.

However, a regional forecaster says the dry season is not expected to be as severe as this year.

Climatologist at the Barbados-based Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology, Dr. Cédric Van Meerbeeck, told the Caribbean Media Corporation that even though there were floods, like in Tobago in October, that was not enough to balance out the deficits recorded in Trinidad, which had its worse dry season on record.

He said just a few Caribbean territories, including Guadeloupe, did not suffer from extreme heat in summer.

On the other hand he cited Jamaica and Cuba which had temperatures soaring up to nearly 40 degrees celcius in June, beating their all-time temperature record.

Another statistic climatologists will be looking at is the number of  hot days.

Dr. Van Meerbeeck says in Barbados, several days in September and last month were hot.

He surmises that there were more hot days this year.
