Chang suggests human trafficking could be causing increase in crimes against children

Dr. Horace Chang

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang has said human trafficking may be a major contributor to the increase in crimes against children.

His comment follows reports that 14 children have been killed in Jamaica since the start of the year.

Dr. Chang said he has been having discussions with the security forces to make operational changes to address attacks on children.

In addition, he said work will be done with the Children's Advocate as well as the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA), in terms of "social intervention that is targeted and effective in dealing with the challenges facing our children today."

On Monday, the decomposed body of 17 year old Stefica Smith of May Pen High School was found in a canefield in Four Paths, Clarendon.

Stefica, who was from the UK, was last seen on Saturday in a taxi in the community.
