Chaos at some mass vaccination centres

There are reports of chaotic scenes at some mass vaccination centres as scores of people gather at the facilities to receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by AstraZeneca.

Teachers and people over the age of 60 are among other groups scheduled to receive the vaccine today.

There are clear breaches of the COVID-19 protocols as persons disregard physical distancing guidelines and others were not wearing their masks.

One woman in her sixties at the National Arena in St. Andrew told our newsteam that she has been waiting for more than an hour despite being early for her appointment.

“From quarter to 10 that’s the appointment I got and we are outside still and awhile ago, someone fainted but that’s not surprising as there is no seating. They are allowing some disabled to go in, but the reality is that they are not allowing some persons. My concern is - all these elderly people - there is no social distancing - some don’t have on their masks.....” she said.

Meanwhile, Public Health Nurse Kenia Williams says there are also crowd control problems at the Junction Health Centre in St. Elizabeth.

“Things are not really going according to plan because of the rain, so some persons were let in before their time. The crowd control is now a problem. We are trying to work as fast as we can to get the people out before the rain starts again,” said Williams.

On the other hand - the Regional Director for North-East Regional Health Authority Fabia Lamm told our newsteam the mass vaccination exercise at Bahia Principe Resort in St. Ann is progressing smoothly.
