Chief Justice says work ongoing to release outstanding court transcripts, judges' notes

Chief Justice Bryan Sykes
Chief Justice Bryan Sykes has said action is being taken to release outstanding transcripts and judges' notes from the high court and parish courts as the delays are having an adverse effect on the justice system.
Justice Sykes said the challenges in producing the documents are due to a staff shortage.
He also cited inefficiencies in the Court Reporting Unit, particularly "on the criminal side" of the Supreme Court.
He said while there are some "excellent" court reporters within this department, there are others "who need to embrace the new vision, and the trajectory and the path that we have taken in order to serve the people of Jamaica better."
The Chief Justice also said the high number of court adjournments is unacceptable as they result in cases being delayed and trial dates being set "four-five years down the road."
Justice Sykes was speaking Wednesday at King's House during the swearing-in ceremony for six judges and two Masters-in-Chambers.
