Eight schools approved for face-to-face classes set back by COVID-19

Fayval Williams

Eight schools approved for face-to-face classes have been affected by confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19.

Education Minister Fayval Williams told the House of Representatives Tuesday afternoon that the schools are located across four regions.

In Region One, Donald Quarrie High and Penwood High in Kingston and St. Andrew were closed for sanitisation after a student and teacher respectively were found to have the virus.

The schools remain closed until contact tracing is complete.

Mrs Williams said St. Mary High in Region Two has delayed reopening plans as a senior member of the administrative team has been exposed to the virus.

For Region Six, she noted that Kemps Hill High and Vere Technical High in Clarendon have also been affected, while three St. Elizabeth schools in Region Five have been impacted.

Sydney Pagon STEM Academy was forced to close after a student tested positive for the virus on January 13. It is to reopen on February 1.

Fullerswood Primary also closed after a teacher tested positive for coronavirus, but it has since reopened.

Two positive cases linked to Munro College have forced that school to suspend face-to-face classes.

Mrs Williams said 292 schools have so far been approved to resume face-to-face classes, with 216 of them reopened so far.
