Dr. Nigel Clarke

The United States' Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has been called in to assist the probe into the massive fraud at investment firm, Stocks and Securities Limited (SSL).

Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke says the Financial Investigation Division and the Fraud Squad sought the assistance of the FBI last week as the probe deepens.

Dr. Clarke said the investigators are determined to "unravel the complexities" of the case and bring those responsible to justice.

He sought to assure that assets gained through fraudulent activity will be seized whether they are identified in Jamaica or overseas.

Dr. Clarke said he will write to other international partners requesting their assistance in the probe at SSL. He said he will specifically call for international forensic auditors to help unravel the 13-year fraud at the firm.

The finance minister expressed alarm that the fraud could have gone undetected for 13 years, and suggested this is the central issue the government will ensure is answered.

But in the meantime, Dr. Clarke urged the public "not to be divided...by narrow ambitions, but to focus on the central issue", which is that the fraud occurred for more than a decade which spanned three political administrations, five FSC chairmen and four executive directors.

He was speaking Monday at a media briefing in response to concerns about the fraud at SSL.
