Four detained as police investigate murder of Hanover businessman

Superintendent Sharon Beeput, head of the Hanover Police

The police say they are making steady progress in their investigation of Wednesday's fatal shooting of a Chinese businessman in Green Island, Hanover.

He Jing, 36, was shot dead in front of his employees and customers in his supermarket, sometime after 4 o'clock.

Four men were detained Thursday during a series of operations by the Hanover Police.

Superintendent Sharon Beeput, head of the Hanover Police, told Radio Jamaica News that investigators have been following strong leads in identifying the killers.

In the incident which was captured on CCTV - footage of which has been circulating on social media - two armed thugs are seen entering the Orange Hill supermarket.

They immediately opened fire on Mr. Jing, hitting him multiple times.

The men were then seen stealing money, liquor and other items before exiting the supermarket.

Superintendent Beeput said the police are using the footage of the incident in their efforts to track down the killers.

However, the senior cop also appealed for citizens to "help us identify the perpetrators".

The incident has caused jitters in the surrounding area, and there are reports that business operators are contemplating closing their doors due to an increase in robberies.

But Superintendent Beeput has urged members of the business community in Green Island and Orange Bay to remain calm, insisting the communities are not yet "at that stage" that requires excessive alarm.

"Situations do happen sometimes but this is not a stage for you to panic. We are doing everything that we can to put effective measures and strategies in place to prevent a reoccurrence," she explained, adding that the Police High Command has promised to provide her team with more resources.

She has also pleaded for the business community to install cameras and to be receptive to showing the footage to the police whenever they need assistance.

She said the police are doing all it can to prevent any further incidents like this in the parish.
