Gov't won't take back allowances already paid to public sector workers

The government says it will not be seeking to recover allowances already paid to public sector workers as part of the implementation of the new compensation system.

Some allowances that are still being paid will cease with implementation of the new system, which will be retroactive to April 1 this year.

The Ministry of Finance has sought to explain that the new system represents a restructuring of the compensation structure for the public sector and was not simply an increase of existing rates or an update of the current system.

It further noted that the gross compensation under the new system has accounted for the statutory deductions that will be due while ensuring the minimum net compensation increase guaranteed by the government for each public sector worker.
