Health Ministry investigating death of individual who took COVID-19 vaccine

Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor McKenzie and Dunstan Bryan

The Ministry of Health has disclosed that one person who received the COVID-19 vaccine has died, but says there is no evidence at this time of a link between the death and the medicine.

During a news conference on Wednesday, Dr. Melody Ennis, Director of Family Health Services in the Health Ministry, reported that the government has so far received 76 notifications of adverse reactions, five of them serious, including a death.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jacquiline Bisasor McKenzie said the ministry is still investigating the death. While she refused to give details, she revealed that "it was a very popular case in the news and a lot of information has been out there already."

Dr. Bisasor McKenzie said no death has so far been linked to the vaccine globally.

She said it should be expected that as more people get vaccinated, some will die from other conditions. But she urged people who have received the vaccine to report any negative effects they may be suffering.

The chief medical officer pledged that the ministry will be transparent about all reports of adverse effects.

Compensation?

Dunstan Bryan, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, has said there is no discussion about possible compensation in the case of death at this time.

Having indemnified the manufacturers against lawsuits arising from any effects caused by the drugs, the government has said it will take full responsibility.

Mr. Bryan said the government is prepared to do so, but such a situation has not yet materialised.

"Once it is determined that the ill-effect is a cause of vaccination, the government would then go through the process of determining through the legal avenue the levels of compensation that would accrue to the family or the individual," he declared.
