Andre Miller, Social Protection Specialist, UNICEF Jamaica
Andre Miller, Social Protection Specialist at UNICEF Jamaica, has highlighted the high risk of poverty faced by families that are caring for a child with a disability.
According to a UNICEF report, these families face what is described as a "triple-threat" in caring for their children. These risks include the financial situation of parents or guardians, the costs associated with caring for a child with a disability and the barriers to accessing social intervention programmes for the child.
Mr. Miller explained Friday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines that the financial strain affects all facets of the family's life.
He noted further that children with a disability face a diminished quality of life.
