The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) is advising the public to exercise great caution when traversing Spanish Town Road, in the vicinity of the Riverton City Dump, as a large fire is currently blazing.
Prevailing windy conditions continue to pose a significant threat, delaying the process of bringing the fire under control, according to ODPEM.
Individuals with respiratory conditions are being reminded to avoid smoke-filled areas. Persons who generally use this area are again being urged to avoid the area where possible, or to exercise extreme caution to mitigate against undue exposure.
A water tanker and fire unit are currently at the dump, and a second tanker and unit have been dispatched to the area.
The National and Parish response mechanisms remain on standby should the situation escalate, ODPEM added.
