Opposition member of Parliament Fitz Jackson

Opposition member of Parliament Fitz Jackson is calling for Automated Banking Machines to be placed in secure locations in remote areas.

Mr. Jackson says the safety of the machines is a reasonable concern for the banks, but insists measures must be found to adequately meet the needs of the public.

Mr. Jackson has suggested that the government assists with the placement of ABMs.

"Where I think the government can come in is that there are some public spaces which are relatively safe such as police stations, and [in] many of these rural towns... there's a police station. Police stations are open, if not 24 hours per day, but many hours for the day. Those are possible areas that [ABMs] can be placed so that access can be made available with a reduced risk of vandalism or theft of the machine," he proposed.

He was speaking in the House of Representatives on Tuesday as a team from the Bank of Jamaica appeared before the Standing Finance Committee.
