The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has approved an application by Westmoreland Central Member of Parliament, George Wright, to take a leave of absence from the party.
Wright has also been relieved of all party related duties.
His leave of absence from the Jamaica Labour Party follows his withdrawal from the party’s Parliamentary Caucus last week and his application for leave of absence from the House of Representatives.
The JLP says its Operations Council commenced deliberations last week to consider the issue of Mr. Wright's membership in the Party.
This followed a meeting involving the Secretariat of the JLP and Mr. Wright, that took place at the directive of Party Leader, Andrew Holness.
JLP General Secretary, Dr. Horace Chang, says the party took note that the police have concluded their investigation without charge following the circulation of a video in which a man is seen assaulting a woman.
However, Dr. Chang says the JLP recognizes that there are unresolved concerns in relation to the issue surrounding Mr. Wright and the actions taken in respect of Wright are therefore necessary.
On Friday the police announced they had closed their investigation into allegations of assault involving the Westmoreland Central MP and a businesswoman identified as Tannisha Singh.
Investigators ended the probe because of the poor quality of the video and the fact that neither Mr. Wright nor Miss Singh is willing to participate in the probe.
Meanwhile, Assistant Lecturer of Public Policy at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Damion Gordon, says it remains to be seen whether George Wright will exit representational politics.
According to Gordon, the JLP has done all it could in responding to the controversy surrounding the Member of Parliament .
And the President of the Jamaica Civil Service Association Oneil Grant ,says it is not enough for Mr. Wright to simply take a leave of absence from the House of Representatives.
He says he's concerned that the MP has not denied the allegations which were made against him or sought to clear his name.
According to Grant, the affair has undermined the public's confidence in the lawmaker and he should resign
