JMEA wants revision of lockdown measures

John Mahfood

The Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA) is calling for Prime Minister Andrew Holness to rethink the current lockdown measures to prevent further fallout in the business sector.

JMEA President John Mahfood says the measures are putting a further strain on commercial entities which have been reeling from the COVID-19 pandemic.

He says small and medium sized businesses are mostly affected by the measures which might "put the nail in the coffin" for their operations.

"Remember, we are really three and half days a week of business activity because we're closing half-day Friday, and we don't believe that it has had the significant impact on bringing down the rate of infections," he contended.

Mr. Mahfood said the narrow window for people to shop is causing congestion, especially in supermarkets and public transportation, which could be counterproductive.

He called for greater monitoring of the transportation sector to ensure passenger limits and mask wearing rules are obeyed.

In addition, he said it is critical that the government "step up the rate of vaccinations and move beyond what is now happening, otherwise we're going to be in this perennial state of lockdowns."

Mr. Mahfood was speaking on Monday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106.
