JPS calls for gov't to ban incandescent bulbs to reduce electricity consumption

Winsome Callum, Director of Corporate Communications and Customer Experience at JPS

A call has been made for the government to ban incandescent bulbs in order to reduce electricity consumption in Jamaica.

It has come from Winsome Callum, Director of Corporate Communications and Customer Experience at the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS).

She says the utility company has found that incandescent bulbs are used by most persons caught stealing electricity.

Speaking Friday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, Ms Callum said the JPS as well as its customers have to bear the losses from electricity theft.

"Well, right now the customers actually pay for approximately 20 per cent of the theft.... The total amount of losses that we're looking at now is about 26/27 per cent. So JPS absorbs about the six to seven per cent and the customers the other 20 per cent is spread across," she revealed.
