Local Government Elections likely to be postponed - Chang

Dr Horace Chang, General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party, has conceded that the local government elections, constitutionally due by the end of next month, are not likely to be held at that time.

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown told the Sunday Gleaner that the government has not approved the budgetary allocation needed to execute the election.

Mr Brown observed that, even if the budget is approved shortly, based on the tight window, it's unlikely that the Electoral Office will have sufficient time to train workers and implement measures to oversee the elections by the February 27 deadline.

In an interview with Radio Jamaica News, Dr Chang acknowledged that the holding of the elections by February 27 is doubtful.

He cited the country's current economic challenges as a factor in that regard.

When asked whether the elections might be rescheduled for later this year, he declined to offer an opinion, stressing that such a decision rests with Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
