Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce says some members not ready as borders set to reopen

Janet Silvera

The Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce has said some of its members are not yet ready for the reopening of Jamaica's borders.

Janet Silvera, President of the Chamber, said while most business operators are happy with the reopening, others are still struggling to recover from COVID-19 challenges.

"Some of them will be doing it on a phased basis. A number of our members have also closed down their businesses and will not reopen. Some of them who maybe had two restaurants will now have one restaurant as a result of the impact that COVID-19 has had on their businesses," she explained.

However, she said members of the tourism sector, such as car rental agencies and hoteliers are prepared for the reopening and are putting in place the required protocols and training staff.

She said companies like insurance agencies have had to reassemble their offices to ensure the 6ft physical distance between employees as well as at least 3ft spacing between customers. However, where these companies are unable to adhere to these measures, they will have to resort to staggering work hours for their staff.

In the meantime, Miss Silvera said members of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce want the government to intensify its COVID-19 public education programme as they have complained that customers are refusing to wear masks and follow other guidelines.

"Some persons feel that there needs to be more information on how they need to operate. They feel as if there has to be something coming out of government that will help them to understand what it is that they really need to do," she said.
