Most Jamaicans opposed to lottery scamming, poll finds

A report from Prince Moore

A majority of Jamaicans strongly oppose lottery scamming.

This is based on data obtained from the recently concluded RJRGLEANER Don Anderson poll.

Lottery scammers rake in an estimated $300 million in Jamaica annually. The proceeds from the illegal activity are used to purchase illegal firearms and fund gang activities.

Despite efforts by the police to put a dent in the illegal activity, it continues to flourish in some communities where some residents support the practice.

However, this is not the case for the majority of Jamaica.

The latest RJRGLEANER Don Anderson poll sought to gauge the reaction of Jamaicans to lottery scamming.

Fifty-eight per cent of respondents say they definitely oppose it while 18 per cent do not really support the illegal activity.

Pollster Don Anderson said a breakdown by parish found that Portland, with 81 per cent, was the most opposed to lottery scamming. It was followed by St. Ann where 78 per cent of respondents said they were not in support of the illegal activity.

Manchester was next with 73 per cent, followed by Kingston & St. Andrew and Trelawny, both with 69 per cent.

Fifty-five per cent of people in Clarendon said they oppose lottery scamming, 52 per cent in St. Catherine and St. Elizabeth, and 49 per cent in St. Mary.

Western parishes, where the activity is more prevalent, fell lower on the list with 44 per cent opposition in Hanover, 27 per cent in Westmoreland and 25 per cent in St. James. It means these parishes are most tolerant to lottery scamming.

Mr. Anderson said 15 per cent of respondents overall are neither for lottery scamming nor against it.

However, three per cent of those interviewed definitely support lottery scamming and six per cent somewhat support it.

The samples were taken from 1,113 Jamaicans across the island.

The margin of error of the poll is plus or minus three per cent.
