MP concerned COVID-19 protocols being breached in St. Thomas

Dr. Fenton Ferguson

Concern is being raised that COVID-19 protocols are being breached in St. Thomas despite an increase in cases of the virus in the parish.

Dr. Fenton Ferguson, Member of Parliament for St. Thomas East, says the parish has recorded sixteen cases of the respiratory illness, but despite this, most residents are not wearing masks or practicing physical distancing.

Dr. Ferguson wants the Health Ministry to intensify public education on the coronavirus, in the hope of "protecting the citizens of St. Thomas."

The member of parliament is also calling for the Ministry of Health to increase capacity at the Princess Margaret Hospital to deal with confirmed cases.

"It is important for us to understand that in this present period, given the nature of the protection that is taking place, it means to me that we could have a significant escalation in the number of confirmed cases," he said, adding that with spike in cases, the hospital "would not be in a position to undertake patients coming in and therefore, that would require transfer to Kingston and elsewhere."
