The National Secondary Students' Council (NSSC) has said the reduced time frame for preparation for CXC exams has come as a big shock.
Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) tests were originally scheduled to get underway on July 27, but have been brought forward by two weeks.
It was announced on Sunday that they will now begin on July 13.
Ree-Anna Robinson, Public Relations Officer for the NSSC, said students across the island are concerns.
"They don't understand how it is that this happened, how this decision was made. They are concerned about their readiness because, originally they were given the two months and persons were now beginning to warm up to that time, to say we're gonna do exams on the 27th, but now it's moved to the 13th," she lamented.
She revealed that the students are also weary about "the measures and the different protocols put in place to safeguard their health" when they return to school.
Ms Robinson has called for student inclusion in decision making on issues affecting them.
She noted that the lack of consultation with students on the particular issue was disappointing, especially as "the importance of youth and student participation is outlined in many legislative framework, including the Education Regulations, which legally gives the Student Council the right to take part in decision making that affects the students."
The Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA) has also criticised the authorities over the change to the date for the CXC exams.
It has warned that it will confuse students.
JTA President Owen Speid told Radio Jamaica News that the situation has exposed the weakness in leadership at the Ministry of Education.
