Carolyn Warren, Managing Director of the state-run National Energy Solutions Limited (NESOL), has admitted that she was convicted for a drug offence 25 years ago.
However, in a news release Friday, Mrs Warren said she was given a suspended sentence and did not spend time in prison.
The NESOL Managing Director issued the release in response to a statement Thursday night by Phillip Paulwell, Shadow Minister for Energy, who called for Prime Minister Andrew Holness, in his capacity as Minister of Energy, to immediately fire her in light of the conviction.
Mrs Warren said she made a mistake and paid for it. She apologised for not declaring the incident prior to her appointment.
Mrs. Warren revealed that she has applied to have her record expunged.
She says even if Mr. Paulwell and the PNP score what they may feel is a political victory in having her services terminated, she will rebuild her life again.
In his statement, Mr. Paulwell said the hiring of Mrs Warren was another example of the lack of accountability by Dr. Andrew Wheatley in the performance of his duties as former Energy Minister and reason why he should be dismissed by the Prime Minister without further delay.
He said the board of directors of NESOL was also culpable as it is clear that no due diligence or fit and proper criteria were applied in selecting Mrs. Warren to head NESOL.
The Parliamentary Opposition has called for the Auditor General to launch a probe at NESOL which was previously the Rural Electrificiation Programme.
