The Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) has issued an alert for the Caribbean region, as a result of the occurrence of cases of the mosquito-borne zika virus.
The zika virus is transmitted by the same Aedes Aegypti mosquito that is the insect vector for dengue and chikungunya, and the symptoms are also very similar.
The zika virus is now present in the Eastern Caribbean Region, Martinique and Puerto Rico.
Considering the volume of travel amongst the islands, PAHO has declared that there is a clear need for increased surveillance and heightened awareness of this virus.
