Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer on Friday said it could file for U.S. authorization of the COVID-19 vaccine it is developing with German partner BioNTech by late next month.
This suggests that it is possible a vaccine could be available in the United States this year.
But that timeline makes it unlikely a vaccine will be available before the U.S. election as President Donald Trump has promised.
Pfizer said it could indicate as early as this month if the vaccine is effective.
It has conducted a 40,000 person clinical trial.
However, the company says it needs safety data that will not be available until next month.
