Several being questioned as manhunt underway for suspect in abduction of two St. Thomas girls

Assistant Commissioner Gary Griffiths, head of the Area Five police headquarters and Earl Palmer, a resident who helped find Winshae Barrett

Assistant Commissioner Gary Griffiths, head of the Area Five police headquarters, says several people have been detained for questioning as the police intensify their manhunt for the suspect in connection with the abduction of two minors in Bath, St. Thomas.

ACP Griffiths gave members of the media an update on the investigation, minutes after 13-year-old Winshae Barrett, who was abducted near her home on Saturday, was found in the hills of Spring Bank, St. Thomas sometime after 11 o'clock.

ACP Griffiths explained that the people held for questioning are not necessarily considered suspects "in the sense that they were actually a party to the crimes that have been committed" but have been detained since "there could have been dialogue between [the suspect] and those persons".

He disclosed that the suspect was out on bail for rape and gun related charges.

ACP Griffiths has urged residents of Bath to be on high alert and to "move in numbers until we can apprehend this man".

He said the 13-year-old, who has been hospitalised, is "extremely weak" and is speaking but "not saying much".

Earl Palmer, who assisted in rescuing Winshae, said residents went to the hills of Spring Bank after one of them became suspicious following the theft of items from his farm.

During the search, some residents spotted the girl and went to her rescue, while others chased after the suspect but were unsucessful in catching him.

Winshae had disappeared a few hours after nine-year-old Phylisa Prussia was found.

Phylisa had been abducted from her home in Bath, St. Thomas, on Thursday.
