South Coast Highway workers protest poor job conditions

Construction workers on the May Pen to Williamsfield leg of the South Coast Highway
 
Workers involved in the construction of the May Pen to Williamsfield leg of the South Coast Highway on Monday walked off the job to protest against poor working conditions.
 
They resumed duties Tuesday morning.
 
The employees are also upset about their pay package.
 
They say they are underpaid despite working overtime or paid less when their work is stopped by inclement weather. 
 
"One work shirt and we haffi find we own shoes. Fourteen day a week we work, no day off none at all and dem work we hard like we a slave.... This is unacceptable and we need the minister dem fi come in and assist we," said a  worker who did not want to be identified.
 
"Where is the help that we are supposed to get? Where is the prosperity in all of this? We a suffer! As we get pay, the money finish," he lamented. 
 
Political representatives from Manchester and Clarendon met with representatives from China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) on Monday to discuss the workers' concerns.
 
The outcome of the meeting is not yet known.
