St. Elizabeth farmers get help following recent fire

Peter Campbell, a farmer in Flagaman, St. Elizabeth

Thirteen farmers in Flagaman, St. Elizabeth, who suffered millions of dollars in losses following a fire last month, have received assistance from the government and private entities.

Losses in the August 16 fire had been estimated at $3.8 million.

One of the beneficiaries of the assistance, Peter Campbell, says crops, irrigation supplies and mulch were destroyed.

He said the fire was was major setback for the farmers but with the help from the government, the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) and several companies, they will "bounce back".

While the cause the last fire is unclear, he suggested that some of the previous fires were caused by the careless disposal of cigarettes.
