St. Lucia's outgoing prime minister shocked by election defeat

St. Lucia's outgoing Prime Minister Allen Chastanet says the results of Monday's general election that resulted in his United Workers Party (UWP) suffering a heavy defeat have come as a shock.

Mr. Chastanet says he remains confident that the policies and programmes initiated by his administration over the last five years would put St. Lucia on the right foot to progress.

The UWP which won the 2016 general election by an 11 to 6 margin, suffered a 13 to 2 defeat.

Two seats were won by independent candidates.

The leader of the St. Lucia Labour Party (SLP), Phillip J. Pierre, is likely to be sworn in later on Tuesday.
