Opposition legislators in Suriname have called for the government to rescind the decision to suspend two senior police officers, who are co-leaders of the Organic Movement that has been leading street protests.
The protesters want the administration of President Chandrikapersad Santokhi to change its socio-economic policies or leave office.
The Justice and Police Minister, Kenneth Amoksi, told the National Assembly last night that the police officers were guilty of conduct and acts that violated their oath of office, the Police Charter, and the Criminal Code.
He said, based on reasonable suspicion of serious criminality or dereliction of duty, the two officers have been removed from office.
