Teen girl to be charged in relation to deadly dorm fire in Guyana

A fifteen-year-old secondary school girl in Guyana who allegedly caused the death of eighteen of her schoolmates and one small child when she set the dormitory of the Mahdia Secondary School on fire, will be charged with murder.

The Head of the Criminal Investigations Department in Guyana said the department arrived at its decision following legal advice.

Police had alleged that the girl started the May 21 fire after the dorm mother and a teacher seized her phone the previous night.

Guyanese authorities say the girl will be charged as an adult since she is above age 14.

DNA results on the remains of the deceased have been returned, confirming their identities.

Of the 19 deceased, the lone male victim was the five-year-old son of the dorm mother.

Officials say the bodies will be handed over to the families for burial.

Guyana's President Irfaan Ali has promised a Commission of Inquiry into the incident.
