The Committee for the Upliftment of the Mentally Ill (CUMI) has once again been hit by thieves.
In the latest incident, at non-profit organisation located in the western parish of St. James, thieves made off with a section of the perimeter fence that surrounds the property.
Joy Crooks, CUMI’s Nurse Administrator says thieves have been the targeting the centre on and off over its 22-year-existence.She said the fence to the adjacent National Water Commission’s (NWC) pump house was also stolen.
“We are making an appeal to the community, whoever is doing it to stop it. Right now we cannot afford to replace the length of chain link fence that is gone and so t he centre is exposed to elements and anybody who wishes to come in a steal whatever else is left,” she said.
CUMI caters to the mentally ill, particularly the homeless and provides rehabilitation programmes for them.
