T&T: Salary increase negotiations could go to Industrial Court

The Trinidad and Tobago government has hinted at the possibility of allowing the salary increase negotiations with public sector wages to go to the Industrial Court, insisting that it is not in a position to offer more than the four per cent wage increase.

In delivering the $57.6 billion budget to Parliament yesterday, Finance Minister Colm Imbert said no responsible government can contemplate bankrupting the entire country simply to appease a portion of the labour force.

The public sector unions, including the Public Service Association, and the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service Association, say the chief personal officer, Dr Daryl Dindial, had offered a salary increase of four per cent during the latest round of negotiations last month.

The unions had originally rejected an initial two per cent offer over an eight-year period.
