T&T to pursue similar method to Jamaica in recovering illegal guns

Trinidad and Tobago's National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds on Monday said there will be no gun amnesty to get illegal weapons off the streets but instead law enforcement authorities are undertaking a programme similar to what exists in Jamaica in dealing with the situation.

Speaking in Parliament in response to an opposition question, Mr. Hinds said the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is engaged in an intelligence led programme to rid the country of illegal weapons.

He said Jamaica and other countries had implemented an active illegal firearm retrieval programme.

Last year, Trinidad and Tobago recorded 448 murders.

The figure has reached almost 200 so far this year with most of the killings being gun-related.
