Two more mentally ill detainees to be released after years in prison

Two more mentally ill detainees who have been languishing in prison for years are scheduled to be released on Friday.

This was disclosed by the Legal Aid Council.

The Council on Wednesday reported that it filed an application for the release of Abraham Lawrence, who has been incarcerated for 23 years.

Mr. Lawrence is scheduled to appear in the St. Elizabeth Parish Court on Friday.

Hugh Faulkner, Executive Director of the Legal Aid Council, said the entity stands ready to bear the cost for the psychiatric evaluation to ensure Mr. Lawrence's release.

He said family members have pledged to care for Mr. Lawrence following his release.

The Legal Aid Council also filed an application for the release of Morris Small, another mentally ill man who was admitted to a correctional facility in 2004.

He is to appear in the Trelawny Parish Court on Friday.

Mr. Small, who has no next of kin, will be placed in an infirmary.

The court requires that mentally ill persons who come in conflict with the law be released in the care of either a family member or an approved institution.
