Yasin Abu Bakr, former Trinidad and Tobago coup leader, has died

Imam Yasin Abu Bakr, the leader of the Jamaat Al Muslimeen in Trinidad and Tobago, has died.

Bakr died at the St. James infirmary on Thursday night.

He was taken to the infirmary after collapsing at home.

Bakr, who led an attempted coup d'état in Trinidad and Tobago in 1990, turned 80 on Tuesday.

Thursday also marked the one year anniversary of his wife's death.

On July 27, 1990, Bakr, who was born Lennox Phillip, led 100 followers to storm the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament and took then Prime Minister A.N.R. Robinson and other Parliamentarians hostage.

They surrendered to police six days later and were charged with treason.

They were ordered released two years later by the Court of Appeal.

Twenty-four people were killed and many more injured in the coup.

Bakr apologised to the nation last year, two weeks before the country observed the 30th anniversary of the failed coup.
