All systems go for Pro-Am card at Sabina Park

Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Sports Reporter Spencer Darlington

All the professional boxers for Saturday night's Pro-Am card at Sabina Park, have  met the required weight limits for their respective fights. The weigh-in took place at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Friday. Both Yurik Mamedov and Eduardo Cordovez tipped the scale at 139.2 pounds, just below the required 140 pound limit for the WBA Fede-Caribe super-lightweight title.

The 28 year old Frenchman Mamedov had his last four fights in the 147 pound welterweight class but he says there was no problem shedding the weight for this, the biggest fight of his career. The 31 year old Venezuelan Cordovez competes between the super lightweight and junior- welterweight classes.

Mamedov who won the United States Boxing Federation junior lightweight title in March of this year, says he has been training for over two months for this fight and is ready for the nine round contest. Cordovez  has 11 knockouts in his 15 fights, expects another early ending.

In the co-feature, American Carlos Dixon and Edinson Torres of Venezuela will be fighting for the WBC youth silver title in the super featherweight class over 8 rounds. The 22 year old Dixon tipped the scale two pounds overweight but after jogging for twenty minutes, the Louisville native weighed in at  129.2 pounds, just below the required limit of 130 pounds.

Torres weighed in two pounds lighter than Dixon says despite Torres being more experienced, it won't be an easy fight. Torres who has lost 4 out of his 16 fights, has promised to put on a show. Russian Vladimir Tereshkin tipped the scale at 256.2 pounds, while his opponent Francisco Silvens of the Dominican Republic, will arrive on Saturday morning.

Both boxers will meet in a 10 round non-title heavyweight fight. In the battle of the Jamaicans, Toriano Nicholas tipped scale at 132 pounds, while Martin Anderson was 5 pounds heavier for their 6 round non-title lightweight contest. National female amateur champion Lisa Fraser will take on Britney McFarlane in an exhibition bout over 3 rounds.
