CWI president says politics still affecting affairs of the board

Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Sports Reporter Spencer Darlington

Cricket West Indies (CWI) president, Ricky Skerritt says politics is still having a heavy hand in the affairs of the board.

Complaints of insularity have always plagued West Indies cricket, but for Skerrit, the continued media leaks and public outbursts are damaging the reputation of the region's game.

Skerritt who has come under pressure in recent times, has asked for key stakeholders to maintain the image of the board.

Earlier this week, Skerritt had to reassure head coach Phil Simmons of his job, following calls by director Conde Riley for him to be sacked after he left the team's bio secure environment in England to attend a funeral.

Even though the complaints came from Riley who is seen as a former right hand man of ex-president Dave Cameron, Skerritt says there are still outside influences affecting the board.

Cameron was defeated 8-4 at the CWI elections in March of last year, and according to Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board president, Azim Bassarath, there are still political tensions because of the Cameron effect.

Despite the inner squabbles, Skerritt says he put himself in a situation that he must now fix regardless of the differences.

In the meantime, CWI is to make its decision at its next board meeting on whether it will support Cameron in his bid to become ICC chairman.
