Easy decision for John Campbell to tour England with the Windies

Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Sports Reporter Jeremain Brown

Opener John Campbell who is one of three Jamaicans selected for the West Indies tour to England, felt safe enough to make the move as three players opted out of the 15-member squad named for the three test series starting on July 8. Along with Campbell, Nkrumah Bonner has earned a maiden test call-up while Jermaine Blackwood has been rewarded for his profilic regional four day display this season.

However, the regional team will be without the services of the experienced Darren Bravo, Shimron Hetmyer and Keemo Paul who have all opted out of the tour. But Campbell, who has played 6 test matches so far, says assurances from the CWI medical team made his decision a no brainer.

The flamboyant left hander made his test debut against England in 2019 and is eager to show his worth against the same opposition once again. Blackwood topped all scorers in the recent domestic season with 784 runs and makes a re-entry to the international scene on a full tour for the first time since 2017 and insists fans will not see his belligerent version.

The squad that will be captained by Jason Holder, sees a maiden call-up for Under-19 winning pacer Chemar Holder who led all pacers with 34 wickets in this year's regional 4-day championship. Kraigg Brathwaite, Shai Hope, Roston Chase, Shamarrh Brooks, Shane Dowrich, Rahkeem Cornwall, Kemar Roach, Raymon Reifer and Alzarri Joseph have also been selected. Shannon Gabriel will be upgraded to the squad once he passes fitness tests in the month long preparation phase.

Meanhwhile, pacers Marquino Mindley and Oshane Thomas were named in the reserve list that departs the Caribbean on Monday. The three tests series starts on July 8 at Southampton.
