I Am Di One in the 1000 Guineas

Commentary by Track Announcer Brian Rickman

The 3 year old bay filly I Am Di One ridden by Canadian-based Barbadian jockey Simon Husbands for trainer Anthony “Baba” Nunes, landed the first classic of the 2019 local racing season, the 45th running of the Jamaica 1,000 Guineas over a mile at Caymanas Park on Saturday. I Am Di One who went off as the 9-5 second choice behind the 6-5 favourite Lady Blue, ran a controlled race and took command alongside Lady Blue shortly after the start of the event where the early pace was dictated by Formal Fashion and Corazon.

I Am Di One returned 1 minute, forty-and-one-fifth to beat Lady Blue by three-and-three-quarter lengths with Casual Drink and Envisaged completing the frame. I Am Di One was one of four winners for Nunes on the 11-race card as he also had victories with Exhilarate, Bruce Wayne and Prince Charles. Champion apprentice Christopher Mamdeen had a three-timer to take over the lead in the jockey’s championship.

The colts and geldings will take the spotlight on Sunday’s 10-race programme when they contest the 2000 Guineas. Wayne DaCosta’s Run Thatcher Run and Nunes’ Earn Your Stripes are the top contenders.
