JRC chairman highlights shortage of grooms at Caymanas Park

Chairman of the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC), Clovis Metcalfe has revealed that there's a shortage of grooms at Caymanas Park.

The JRC is imploring grooms to get licensed and its chairman says the commission will look into extending the current amnesty.

grooms are generally required to do a basic Math and English test and for some it may prove a challenge but, Metcalfe says the commission is not against helping those who have literacy and or numeracy issues.

One issue that has been a sticking point for the licensing process for grooms and members of the other occupational groups at Caymanas Park is the insurance portion of the fee.

However, Metcalfe says a change in carrier has seen a reduction in the cost.

Meanwhile, Grooms Association of Jamaica president, Fabian White says the new package is better than the previous one.

At the end of 2019, 281 grooms were licensed.

According to the latest figures from the JRC, as at June 16, 122 grooms were licensed, while 7 were awaiting approval.
