Windies suffer heavy defeat to Sri Lanka in opening test

West Indies wicketkeeper batsman Joshua da Silva has given credit to the Sri Lankan spinners following their 187 run victory over the Caribbean side in Galle on Thursday.

The Caribbean side, which began the day on 52-6, chasing a target of 348 for victory, was bowled out for 160.

Nkrumah Bonner top scored with 68, while da Silva added 54, as they shared in a 100 run 7th wicket partnership.

Lasith Embuldenya was the pick of the bowlers for the home side with 5 for 46 in the second innings.

Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratna was awarded the Player of the Match after making 147 in the first innings.

Scores in the match: Sri Lanka 386 and 191-4 declared and West Indies 230 and 160. The second test bowls off on Sunday evening Jamaica time also in Galle.
